STMicroelectronics (ST) today announced that the first batch of 40nm STM32 microcontrollers (MCUs), manufactured by HuaHong Grace, has been officially delivered to Chinese customers. This marks ST as the first international semiconductor company to complete the full-process production—from wafer fabrication to packaging and testing—of its mainstream MCU products within China.
The localized production utilizes the same 40nm embedded non-volatile memory (eNVM) technology and quality control standards as ST’s global wafer fabs. HuaHong Grace’s Wuxi facility performs wafer foundry services in strict accordance with ST’s unified quality requirements. Packaging and testing are carried out by ST’s Shenzhen plant and local assembly partners. ST emphasized that the locally manufactured products are identical in design and performance to those produced overseas, ensuring customers can use them directly without any software or hardware modifications.
The localization program began with the high-performance STM32H7 series and is scheduled to expand to the STM32H5 and STM32C5 series within 2026. With this initiative, ST has established the industry’s first “dual supply chain” system—offering Chinese customers the option of both locally manufactured and overseas-produced products, with identical quality and specifications, thereby enhancing supply chain resilience and delivery flexibility.
ST stated that this strategic move is aimed at deepening its service capabilities in the Chinese market, shortening delivery cycles through localized production, and better meeting customer demands in industrial control, automotive electronics, and the Internet of Things (IoT).
