Unpacking Apple's 3QFY26 Results: Robust Hardware Demand Masks Lingering Risks — AI Capacity Crunch and Memory Inflation. Can the Strong Run Last?

Apple released its fiscal 2026 third-quarter earnings (for the period ended June 27, 2026), revealing a sharply polarized profile. While revenue and net profit hit all-time highs for the June quarter, Apple's stock tumbled more than 6% in after-hours trading, pressured by underwhelming forward guidance and supply chain disruptions triggered by the global AI expansion.

Hardware Staged a Solid Recovery, yet Growth was Uneven Across Product Lines

The company posted quarterly revenue of $109.42 billion, up 16% YoY; net income reached $29.79 billion (+27% YoY), with diluted EPS at $2.02 (+29% YoY). Nevertheless, the headline numbers mask notable divergence across business segments:

Core hardware outperformed forecasts: iPhone revenue increased 22% YoY to $54.25 billion, and Mac revenue jumped 29% to $10.35 billion, powered by strong uptake of the entry-level MacBook Neo. The two product lines emerged as the primary growth drivers in the quarter.

Several segments showed signs of weakness: iPad revenue dipped 5.9% YoY to $6.19 billion, weighed down by a high comparable base from last year's affordable A16 iPad launch; Wearables & Accessories posted only a modest 6.5% growth.

Services and regional markets faced headwinds. Services, Apple's core profit engine covering the App Store and iCloud, generated $30.74 billion in revenue. While posting YoY growth, the figure fell short of the $31.22 billion consensus and edged down sequentially, weighed by currency fluctuations and lackluster mobile gaming revenue. Greater China revenue rose 22% YoY to $18.82 billion but still missed the $19.6 billion market forecast.

Capacity Constraints and Memory Inflation: The Real Story Behind Soft Q4 Guidance

The after-hours selloff stemmed mainly from Apple's cautious Q4 outlook. The company projected Q4 revenue growth of just 9%–11%, below the 12% consensus, while gross margin guidance of 47%–48% also appeared muted. Two critical challenges are at play:

Competition for AI manufacturing capacity is tightening component supply. Cook admitted the biggest operational bottleneck this quarter is constrained supply of advanced-node SoCs. Hyperscalers worldwide are scaling up AI data centers, pushing semiconductor vendors to claim more of TSMC's advanced wafer capacity, which in turn limits chip supply for iPhones, Macs and iPads.

Relentless memory inflation is eroding profit margins. Sharp, continuous price hikes for memory chips are compressing Apple's margins. The headline 50.1% gross margin looks encouraging, but roughly 2 percentage points stemmed from one-off U.S. tariff refunds, which added $0.11 to diluted EPS. Stripping out this temporary benefit, the underlying gross margin was around 48.1%. As the advantage of low-cost inventory fades, profitability will face greater pressure next quarter. Cook said Apple is expanding its supplier ecosystem to mitigate rising memory costs.

Trade-off Between Price Hikes and AI Capital Spending

To counter climbing storage costs, Apple has lifted prices on certain Mac and iPad models, and investors widely expect price increases for the new iPhones launching this September. While pricing adjustments help pass through cost burdens in the short term, they risk suppressing consumer upgrade cycles and slowing long-term Services momentum.

On capital expenditure, Apple maintains a distinctive asset-light defensive posture compared with cloud hyperscalers. Its capex remains far below the hundreds of billions that cloud players are pouring into AI infrastructure. Apple allocates over $10 billion to R&D targeting on-device silicon and AI capabilities. Even so, amid the global race for AI infrastructure — where top tech firms are locking up computing and storage resources — Apple cannot escape industry-wide competition for foundational hardware. It will have to cope with sustained memory cost inflation and compete for critical semiconductor resources over the long run.
