Sanand Plant Moves from Opening to Scale-up
Micron's plant in Sanand, India, is the first semiconductor assembly and test facility established under India's semiconductor program and began commercial production in February this year. At the opening ceremony of SEMICON India 2026 in New Delhi, Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra revealed that the company's assembly and test plant in Sanand, Gujarat, will see a significant jump in capacity, from processing "tens of millions" of chips this year to "hundreds of millions" in 2027.
Mehrotra linked this capacity expansion to rising demand for memory and storage driven by AI systems, noting that larger AI models require greater memory capacity as well as faster, denser, and more energy-efficient products. He noted that AI starts with data—without data there are no models, and data cannot move, scale or turn into an answer without memory and storage.
Micron's India Plant Begins Shipping "Made in India" Memory Worldwide
The Sanand unit is an assembly and testing operation, not a wafer fabrication plant. It receives advanced DRAM and NAND wafers from Micron’s global manufacturing network and turns them into finished memory and storage products.
It is reported that Micron has sent the plant's first shipment of India-made memory modules to Dell Technologies for laptops manufactured and sold in India. Sanjay Mehrotra said that the plant's current output capacity already exceeds the memory required by India's laptop market. Finished DRAM and NAND products were now leaving Micron's facility in Sanand, Gujarat, for customers around the world with the "Made in India" label.
