The UK Announces Sunrise Supercomputer Project

By: QIN 9 hours ago

The UK government recently announced a £45 million (approximately RMB 413 million) investment to launch the "Sunrise" supercomputer project, aimed at accelerating nuclear fusion energy research and contributing to achieving net-zero emissions goals. Funded by the UK Department for Energy Security and Net-Zero Emissions, and led by the Atomic Energy Authority, the project is a joint effort with companies such as AMD, Dell, Weka, and the University of Cambridge.

The Sunrise supercomputer, with a power output of 1.4 megawatts, is expected to be operational in June this year. It will become the world's most powerful AI supercomputer dedicated to nuclear fusion, providing 6.76 angstroms of AI acceleration modeling capabilities to solve core challenges in nuclear fusion, such as plasma turbulence and materials development. As a key step in building the UK's first AI growth zone, the project will also strengthen the UK's high-performance computing capabilities, promote clean energy technology innovation, and create related skilled jobs in the UK.
