AMD Zen 6 Enhances Hardware-Level QoS for Precise Storage and Memory Resource Control

By: QIN 2 days ago

AMD has recently disclosed details of the PQOS (Platform Quality of Service) extension for its Zen 6 architecture, introducing three new hardware-level QoS features. These focus on addressing resource contention in data center multi-tenant environments, CXL memory pooling, and tiered storage architectures.

Among them, GLSBE (Global Slow Memory Bandwidth Enforcement) sets global bandwidth limits for slow memory resources such as CXL memory and remote NUMA memory. GLBE provides global external bandwidth control from the CPU to the memory/storage subsystem. Working together, they prevent slow storage from becoming a performance bottleneck. On this basis, PLZA ensures that kernel-mode critical paths, including storage drivers and file systems, receive high-priority resource guarantees.

These three features offer fine-grained control through model-specific registers (MSRs), helping optimize CXL memory pooling and tiered storage deployments, thereby improving storage I/O stability and quality of service in enterprise and cloud scenarios.
